Most of our backyard animals disappear when it rains. Not the sparrows. They’re visiting en masse, pecking at food on the ground or in the feeders.
What makes sparrows so much tougher than the squirrels? Are they hungrier? I’d like to learn the answer.
I was a biologist in a former life. Wet fur is no fun while wet feathers do not feel so bad. Nor smell like the wet fur does.
There is a web site where you experience what these feelings are like:

Birds, unlike squirrels, have feathers that are waterproofed. Water rolls off them, more or less, whereas our gray buddies end up getting soaked. No fun eating that way, not even if the seed is the most premium on the planet.
