It’s a good day when a certain chunky squirrel with a flaming red tail tears across the lawn. I’m happy to feed Miss Freddie, the gutsiest squirrel in my nook of town. She’ll take a nut from my fingers. Naturally I hold it by my fingertips because those rodent teeth are sharp. I like my fingers.

Simple pleasures are the best. I hope Freddie continues to make your day for years to come, just as our Little Notch Ear, the resident momma and dominatrix of our yard, did for us more than a decade ago.

I wonder if Freddie knows just how good she has it. Imagine your delight if she learned to ring the door bell and wait.
And I wonder if she feels she has trained you. Imagine she delight in thinking, “See how well I’ve trained her to hand out peanuts. All I have to do is step upon these flat rocks, and she walks out with an offering.”

Freddie rules! I think she probably realizes that she has trained us.

She’s one spoiled girl, as she should be.
