The squirrels had to tunnel through the snow to reach the nuts we threw on our back porch today. It has been snowing all weekend.

The Squirrel Log on our maple tree has been popular, with other food sources buried under the fluffy white stuff. I ventured out in the snow to replace it.

I also threw out some bird seed for my feathered friends.

Whole clams.

I couldn’t believe that whole clams adorned my white clam pizza at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana. Yum yum. You can watch a Roadfood video about the pizzeria.

Some other highlights of our day trip to New Haven:
* Hearing a couple of (Yale Glee Club member) singers harmonizing under a university building’s dome with great acoustics so they sounded like an entire choir
* Exhibit of watercolors by David Cox, “Sun, Wind, and Rain,” at the Yale Center for British Art
* Sterling Library’s cathedral-like architecture, with an indoor gargoyle reading a book saying “U R A JOKE”
* Feeding some local squirrels
* Eating biscotti and other treats fromLibby’s Italian Pastry Shop, just down the street from Frank Pepe

Movement whooshed into the arborvitae ahead of the red fox running into my back yard. I think they were probably the sparrows who’d been noshing on bird seed a few minutes earlier. I hadn’t seen any squirrels yet that day.

The fox wasn’t the only predator of the past week. I also spotted the hawk up in a tree. The best way for me to scare it away: make noise by throwing a corn cob against the garage.

Iggy and I have got to protect our squirrels and birds.

I don’t enjoy picking up my messes. Probably most people don’t. But they force themselves.

Sometimes I set my 15-minute timer to encourage myself to make a small dent in my paper piles. Fifteen minutes isn’t very long, is it?

Yet I’m easily distracted into doing other things. For example, picking up a newspaper clipping encourages me to surf over to the website discussed therein. I don’t know how to stop myself.
