In the last hour the cold numbed my toes as I waited on the platform for a commuter rail train that was running “35 to 40 minutes late,” according to the electronic signboard.

After the train was 45 minutes late, I called MBTA customer service only to be told “We have no way of knowing where the train is, or when it’ll get there.”

The delay was apparently caused by CSX construction on the tracks. Trying to plan my next commute into Boston, I asked, “Do you know how long the construction will last?”

The clerk replied, “For the rest of my lifetime.”

Once I got on the train, a conductor apologized for the delay. He said the construction will continue for at least the next week and a half. “Trains will run 40-60 minutes late. There’s nothing we can do about it.”

Looks like I’ll have to leave the house earlier and catch the last express bus into town, instead of waiting for the later train from Worcester-Framingham.
