INTO THE DEEP END

You escaped into the pool’s deep end
while mom turned away.
You squatted, held your breath, felt the tiles under your toes.

You relaxed, looking at a quiet, blue universe.
No slaps, no “don’t get fresh with me.” You got lost. Time melted away.
Then the lifeguard pulled you out.
You still wonder why.

Does this poem make any sense at all? What do you think it’s about?

Your comments are welcome. I haven’t got into the swing of poetry yet, so I can benefit from any and all feedback.
