There were no squirrels or birds to be seen in our backyard when Iggy and I returned from our two-week European vacation early Friday evening. Our supply of squirrel and bird food had been totally wiped out, even with the extra foil containers that Iggy had set out.
Naturally, I went to the back yard shortly after dropping my bags inside. Then I threw out a handful of peanuts. One squirrel turned up within fifteen minutes. Within thirty, two of them were working the patio and hopping up to the squirrel cafe, which I’d refreshed with a corn cob.
The next morning (Saturday) I saw one fat sparrow sitting on our kitchen fence with a morsel of corn in its mouth. Soon thereafer, Iggy headed out to Agway to stock up on animal food. By 4 p.m., a grackle grazed in the grass and nine sparrows pecked at seed scattered on the patio.
By this morning (Sunday), the sparrows rediscovered the hanging bird feeder that Iggy restocked yesterday.
