A squirrel fell out of my maple tree.

She lay on the ground for a long moment, then climbed up the tree where she’d been in a circling chase with another squirrel. I’ll keep an extra close eye on my backyard for the next day, in case she shows up looking sickly.

This is the second time I’ve seen a squirrel in a chase fall out of the tree next to my garage.

My daylilies have bloomed for this first time this year. Yippee!

Just planted a packet of sunflower seeds on my front berm. Last year I did the same. Only three of them grew to maturity. Can I do better this year?

My peonies are shedding their petals, while my columbines are still going strong. Two of three shrub rose varieties have started blooming.

My favorite squirrel girl bagged a load of nuts today.

Freddie ran right over when I went outside to plant kale and Swiss chard seeds. She circled back when I pruned my shrub roses. She knows a sucker when she sees one.

As I wrapped up my outdoor work, Sucker #2, my husband, Iggy, emerged to clean and refill the bird baths, restock the Squirrel Palace and our bird feeders, and dispense nuts to a certain cheeky girl.

It was a good day for Freddie. And for Iggy and me.

It’s a good day when a certain chunky squirrel with a flaming red tail tears across the lawn. I’m happy to feed Miss Freddie, the gutsiest squirrel in my nook of town. She’ll take a nut from my fingers. Naturally I hold it by my fingertips because those rodent teeth are sharp. I like my fingers.

It’s a sunny, cold day. The sparrows are frolicking in our heated bird bath, which I topped off with water earlier today.

The temperature got well above freezing today, but it didn’t make much of a dent in the thick crust of ice in our back yard, driveway, or sidewalks. I’m afraid the thaw is only making matters worse because the melted snow will turn to ice.

I worked with the ice chipper to break a bath to the garage. Freddie, the friendly squirrel, rewarded me by coming over for some peanuts, which she’ll take from my hand. That made me smile.
